Today is the birthday of anarchist political prisoner Alexey Rozhkov

He is turning 28. Alexey Rozhkov is an anarchist from the city of Berezovsky in the Sverdlovsk region. He was involved in punk music, previously played bass in the band Tell Me the Reason, and was interested in existentialist philosophy.

Rozhkov was one of the first to express protest against the war in Ukraine through a partisan action. On March 11, 2022, Alexey set fire to the military enlistment office in his hometown. He was immediately detained. He initially faced up to 15 years in a penal colony, but the charge was later changed to a lesser one, and the case ended with a travel restriction order. With the help of human rights activists, Alexey managed to leave Russia.

However, due to the lack of a foreign passport, he was unable to travel to safe countries and remained in Kyrgyzstan, where he was waiting for a humanitarian visa and documents to leave for the European Union. He did not manage to wait—he was abducted by local security forces and handed over to the FSB at the border.
Alexey Rozhkov was sentenced to 16 years in prison. During the trial, he stated:
“To label me a terrorist means to blur the distinction between me and those inhumane thugs who carried out the terrorist attack at Crocus, and others like them. I did not want anyone to be harmed, did not seek any personal gain, was not recruited by anyone, and, acting according to my conscience and sharing universal moral principles, expressed an anti-war protest in which no one was supposed to be harmed—and no one was harmed.”

On September 27, 2024, the human rights project Support for Political Prisoners. Memorial recognized Rozhkov as a political prisoner.
